COST Action ‘SUSTAIN’ Supports Young Researcher’s Participation in ICONST 2025

Supported by the COST Action ‘SUSTAIN – Sustainable use of salt-affected lands’, PhD student Sultan Akyol from Pamukkale University participated in the ICONST Conference held in Budapest, Hungary (28–30 May 2025) through an ITC Conference Grant.

Her presentation, “The Role of Tuber Mycorrhization in Enhancing Salt Tolerance of Oak Seedlings”, attracted strong interest from experts in plant–fungi interactions and forest restoration under salt stress. Constructive feedback received during the event helped refine her ongoing doctoral project.

This participation boosted the international visibility of her research and opened new doors for academic collaboration in forest pathology and stress physiology.

Salinisation, the accumulation of water-soluble salts in the soil, is one of the major causes of soil degradation affecting 833 million hectares of land and 1.5 billion inhabitants worldwide. However, these lands can be used by applying saline agriculture, involving soil, water and salt-tolerant crop management methods.
