Working Group 5

Policy framework for the salinisation management

Description

This WG will determine how to put salinisation on the European policy agenda and raise awareness in the

society. Currently, the EU and most European countries have no comprehensive policies on how to address this challenge. At the same time, the governance of saline agriculture is highly fragmented, appearing in multiple single policies and agreements on other issue areas such as water management, and undertaken by a myriad

of public, private and hybrid actors. In this WG we will bring together relevant actors to discuss how to orchestrate the existing governance landscape of saline agriculture initiatives, bring salinisation on the policy agenda, and design effective policy instruments to support the upscaling of innovative soil, water and crop

management techniques in crucial frameworks and agreements.

Objectives

Tasks

  • Task 5.1

    Discuss with the stakeholders challenges and opportunities of current and future policies on the salinity to support national and international agricultural policies;

  • Task 5.2

    Organise meetings with local authorities and government extension agents to exchange experiences and to disseminate the main results of SUSTAIN to suggest policy actions to include salinisation in the European policy agenda;

  • Task 5.3

    Organise a workshop with representatives of international organisations and impact investors to build long-term capacity;

  • Task 5.4

    Determine how saline agriculture can support implementation of the SDGs

COST Action CA22144

Salinisation, the accumulation of water-soluble salts in the soil, is one of the major causes of soil degradation affecting 833 million hectares of land and 1.5 billion inhabitants worldwide. However, these lands can be used by applying saline agriculture, involving soil, water and salt-tolerant crop management methods.
