From March 26–27, the farmlands of Tenuta di Alberese (Ente Terre Regionali Toscane) became a hub of scientific exchange as the COST Action SUSTAIN held its 3rd Training School on “Plant, Soil, and Water Capability Assessment.”
The Training School brought together participants and experts from across Europe and Nord Africa to explore how a range of disciplines, from the natural to the social sciences, contribute to understanding and addressing the issue of secondary salinization.
Set against the backdrop of the Maremma National Park, a site emblematic of Tuscany’s cultural heritage and agrobiodiversity, the event combined field-based learning with interdisciplinary dialogue through activities such as soil mapping, vegetation and soil analysis, and assessments of ecosystem services.
Crucially, the event emphasised the value of stakeholder engagement and integrated approaches in managing salt-affected ecosystems. The cross-disciplinary exchange fostered new insights and collaborations, reinforcing the need for multi-actor strategies to tackle the complex challenges posed by land salinisation.
