International Stakeholder Outreach of SUSTAIN

Work Package 4.2, The Salt Doctors, 2026

The COST Sustain action aims to strengthen international collaboration on saline agriculture. As part of this mission, the Action values communication with as many relevant stakeholders as possible. Task 4.2 focuses on these outreach activities. Below, three international trips by Dr. Bas Bruning from The Salt Doctors — where he spoke about the Action — are highlighted.

The Gambia, February 2026

Two outreach events were held in The Gambia, where the COST Sustain Action was introduced to field officers, farmers union leaders, farmers, and local authorities. Combined, over 60 relevant stakeholders were reached across the two events.

Chile, April 2026

In Chile, about 20 relevant stakeholders were reached during an event at the Dutch embassy in Santiago de Chile by the Dutch agricultural councilor (Lucas du Pré, visible at the centre -left in the photo, standing).

Argentina, April 2026

In Argentina, about 20 relevant stakeholders were reached during an event at the Dutch embassy in Buenos Aires by the Dutch agricultural councilor. The VU and WUR also contributed to this event online.

COST Action CA22144

Salinisation, the accumulation of water-soluble salts in the soil, is one of the major causes of soil degradation affecting 833 million hectares of land and 1.5 billion inhabitants worldwide. However, these lands can be used by applying saline agriculture, involving soil, water and salt-tolerant crop management methods.
